Bhilai Institute of Technology was established in July, 1986. It is the first self-financed Engineering College of the state of Chhattisgarh and is managed by the Bhilai Institute of Technology Trust. The biggest leap towards modernity and development of the Chhattisgarh region was the establishment of Bhilai Steel Plant at Bhilai. This single step proved to be an important factor in the transformation of an agrarian society into a thriving industrial region. These important developments necessitated suitably trained personnel. Withabove in view, some organizations, industrialists, charitable institutions and philanthropic societies of the region took an initiative for establishing an engineering educational institution. For this a trust was formed and duly registered. The Government of erstwhile Madhya Pradesh accorded the permission to open a self-supporting and self-financing engineering institute and thus, the Bhilai Institute of Technology came into existence.

FACTS
The institute started in a very modest scale with four undergraduate courses in Engineering (B.E.) and an intake capacity of 180 students in 1986. The BIT Trust comprises of leading duly constituted Governing Body consisting of the representatives of the Trust, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), State Government and Affiliating University. Hostel facilities are available for students who live at a good distance from the institute.

The institute boasts of a fully equipped library with over 23,000 volumes of books. The institute has a 10,000 sq.ft. auditorium with seating arrangements for 500 students. The institute has a fully equipped gymnasium with full facilities.
